It can transmit as many as 35 types of diseases that can infect both humans and livestock. Rats can adapt to their environment and can have children quickly. One pair of rats can generate 15,000 descendants in a year. This characteristic allowed it to survive over the centuries.

In other countries, rats are not considered pests but are being patronized as a protein-rich delicacy. Eating rat meat is considered as stigma but it is becoming popular in nations like Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, India and other parts of Asia.
